In response to the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes, particularly in Bengkulu, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) has designed a special initiative called “IPB Quick Response” to address this health issue. Type 2 diabetes (DMT2) is known to be a non-communicable disease with a rising prevalence in Indonesia. This disease not only has a broad impact on individuals’ quality of life but also poses a significant economic burden on society. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize the prevention and management of diabetes through effective and sustainable education.
In line with this, Prof. Dr. Evy Damayanthi, MS, initiated strategic efforts to reduce the prevalence of Type 2 DM as part of community service. These efforts aim to enhance the knowledge and understanding of both lecturers and prospective healthcare workers at Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu and STIKes Sapta Bakti Bengkulu. The event, held as a Training of Trainers (ToT) program with 110 participants, took place at the Training Center Building (GTC) of Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu. The topics discussed in the ToT included understanding diabetes and living with it, choosing safe and diabetes-friendly foods, education strategies, wound care, exercise recommendations, physical activity, and diabetes diet. These topics were prepared and delivered by the IPB Quick Response team (Prof. Dr. Evy Damayanthi, MS; Dr. dr. Mira Dewi, MSi; Dr. Zuraidah Nasution, MSc; Muhammad Aries, MSi) along with the team from Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu (Ns. Idramsyah, MKep, SpKepMB; Dr. Meriwati, SKM, MKM) and STIKes Sapta Bakti Bengkulu (Ns. Dimas Dewa Darma, STrKep, MTrKep). The two-day ToT event was highly successful, with participants showing an average increase in knowledge scores.
The ToT event is expected to be more than a one-off activity as the IPB Quick Response Team has planned it as an initial event, coinciding with the signing of an MoU between IPB (represented by the Chair of the IPB Board of Professors and also the Team Leader, Prof. Dr. Evy Damayanthi, MS) and Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu (Director of Poltekkes Kemenkes RI, Bengkulu Province, Eliana, SKM, MPH) and STIKes Sapta Bakti (Chair of STIKes Sapta Bakti Bengkulu, Djusmalinar, SKM, MKes). This MoU will facilitate various follow-up activities aimed at tackling the rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Bengkulu.
